Players of the current WAFCON champions, the Super Falcons of Nigeria, have reacted to the postponement of the 2026 edition of the tournament.

The decision by the Confederation of African Football (CAF) to postpone the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) has left the continent’s football community in a state of shock, with players and fans alike venting their frustrations over the abrupt change.

Originally scheduled to kick off in Morocco on March 17, the continental showpiece has been pushed back to a new window of July 25 – August 16, 2026. The shift, announced just days before the tournament was set to begin, was attributed by CAF to “unforeseen circumstances.”

For the participating teams, most of whom were already in the final stages of their preparations, the announcement feels less like a logistical adjustment and more like a significant setback.

The Super Falcons of Nigeria, who were deep in “tournament mode” following a two-match friendly series against Cameroon, are among those most affected. The sudden decamping of the squad and the return of players to their respective clubs has drawn sharp criticism from the team's leadership.

Super Falcons captain Rasheedat Ajibade, who has been a vocal leader for the side, took to social media to voice her dismay. In a direct and widely shared message, she stated, “African women’s football deserves better.”

Her sentiment was echoed by teammate Rinsola Babajide, who did not mince words regarding the timing of the decision. Calling the situation “embarrassing,” Babajide highlighted the practical chaos that such last-minute changes create for professional athletes who must constantly align their club commitments, personal schedules, and international duties.

This frustration is compounded by a history of perceived inequality. Former captain Desire Oparanozie, a veteran of several WAFCON campaigns, pointed to the recurring pattern of disruptions that seem to plague the women’s game.

Reflecting on past cancellations and contrasting them with the consistent prioritisation of the men’s AFCON, she noted that players consistently “put their lives on hold” to prepare for these tournaments, only to see their efforts undermined by late-stage administrative indecision.

The uncertainty surrounding the host nation has added another layer of anxiety. While Morocco remains the official venue, reports of logistical challenges and the potential for South Africa to step in as a contingency host have fueled speculation and unease.

For the Super Falcons, who were building momentum and cohesion, the four-month wait until July presents a difficult challenge. The team must now reset, manage player fitness over a longer period, and navigate the uncertainty of a tournament calendar that has been suddenly and dramatically rewritten.

As the dust settles on the announcement, the overriding message from the players is clear: they are ready to compete, but they are tired of being treated as an afterthought in the broader landscape of African football.

Nigeria are champions of the 2024 African Women’s Cup of Nations (WAFCON), clinching their 10th title in what will go down as one of the most dramatic finals in the tournament’s history.

Trailing 2–0 at half-time, the Super Falcons mounted an incredible second-half comeback. Morocco had taken the lead just 12 minutes in through a penalty converted by Ghizlane Chebbak, before Sanaâ Mssoudy added a second 12 minutes later to put the hosts in control.

Super Falcons have claimed their 10th WAFCON title after a historic comeback against the host nation, Morocco.

But Nigeria responded with resilience and brilliance after the break. Goals from Ijeoma Esther Okoronkwo and Folashade Ijamilusi brought the Super Falcons level, with the team converting a penalty and surviving a penalty scare of their own. Then, just minutes before stoppage time, Jennifer Onyinyechi Echegini struck the decisive winner, sealing a remarkable 3–2 victory.

Chiamaka Nnadozie, the Super Falcons’ brilliant shot-stopper and Brighton & Hove Albion’s newest signing from Paris FC, was named Goalkeeper of the Tournament. Meanwhile, team captain, Rasheedat Ajibade, whose influence was felt throughout the tournament, deservedly claimed the Player of the Tournament award. Morocco captain, Ghizlane Chebbak, picked up the Golden Boot, while South Africa were honoured with the Fair Play Award; fitting recognition of their discipline and sportsmanship throughout the tournament.

Here are the players who were shortlisted for the WAFCON 2024 team of the tournament have been revealed.

Nigeria’s Super Falcons capped their record-extending 10th Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) title with four of their stars earning spots in the official CAF Team of the Tournament.

The Confederation of African Football (CAF) unveiled its standout XI following Nigeria’s dramatic 3-2 comeback win over host nation Morocco in the final, held in Rabat.

Leading the selections is goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie, who was also named Best Goalkeeper of the Tournament. Her commanding presence and clutch saves proved vital to Nigeria’s unbeaten run to the title. Michelle Alozie, a standout for the Houston Dash, was rewarded for her consistent performances at right back, showing remarkable energy and positional awareness.

The attacking third of the Best XI also features two Nigerian stars. Captain Rasheedat Ajibade, named Player of the Tournament, excelled on the right wing with her blend of leadership, creativity, and goal-scoring impact. On the left flank is Esther Okoronkwo, who starred in the final by scoring one goal and assisting two others in Nigeria’s stunning comeback. With a total of two goals and six assists, she finished as WAFCON 2024’s most productive attacking player.

The Team of the Tournament also includes three players from finalists Morocco, and two each from Ghana and South Africa, the remaining semi-finalists. Ghana edged South Africa to take bronze in the third-place playoff.

In midfield, the trio of Grace Asantewaa (Ghana), Ghizlane Chebbak (Morocco) who the tournament’s top scorer with five goals and golden boot winner and Refiloe Jane (South Africa) provided a perfect blend of creativity, control, and threat.

Up front, Ibtissam Jraïdi (Morocco) earned the central striker spot after an impressive campaign, while Karabo Dhlamini (South Africa) slotted in at left back. The centre-back pairing features Portia Boakye (Ghana) and Bambanani Mbane (South Africa).

The all-star XI was arranged in a 4-3-3 formation, highlighting a balance of defensive strength and attacking flair across the continent’s best performers.

Morocco and Nigeria Advance to Final of WAFCON 2024

WAFCON 2024 hosts Morocco powered through a penalty shootout to make it into their second consecutive final match. Anissa Lahmari scored the decisive penalty kick as the Atlas Lionesses squeezed past Ghana. All four penalty takers for Morocco scored, while the Black Queens missed their last two penalties after scoring the first two.

Ghana took the lead during regulation, through Stella Nyamekye’s strike halfway through the first half. Sakina Ouzraoui pulled Morocco level shortly into the second half, setting up a tense atmosphere as the match went all the way through extra time. The Black Queens won their quarterfinal match against Algeria on penalties, but they couldn’t repeat the same feat against Morocco, and will now attempt to earn a third-place finish on Friday versus South Africa.

Morocco entered this year’s WAFCON as one of the strongest contenders, as the Atlas Lionesses have emerged as a growing force in African women’s football. They cruised past Mali in the quarterfinals, winning 3-1 and conceding only a late consolation goal.

Morocco boasts two of the highest goalscorers in the tournament so far, including last WAFCON’s Player of the Tournament Ghizlane Chebbak, who scored four goals in the group stage but is yet to find the back of the net in the knockout phase. Forward Ibitsam Jraïdi scored twice against Mali and was among the penalty scorers in the semifinal match. There will be no lack of firepower on Saturday, as the hosts will look to win their first WAFCON title against record holders Nigeria.

A late, chaotic goal was the definitive moment as Nigeria’s Super Falcons edged their way past South Africa to the final. Michelle Alozie’s long ball forward from close to the halfway line flew by two of her chasing teammates and crawled past Banyana Banyana’s onrushing goalkeeper, just over two minutes before the final whistle for regulation time was due to be blown.

Nigeria edged the defending champions out 2-1. Super Falcons’ captain Rasheedat Ajibade opened the scoring from the penalty spot at the end of the first half; however, Linda Motlhalo leveled things up on the hour mark. Alozie’s auspicious strike closed things, leaving South Africa to now compete in Friday's third-place match.

The Super Falcons will be playing for a tenth WAFCON title and a twelfth overall continental title on Saturday. The team has had a remarkable run to the final, with Motlhalo’s strike being the only goal it has conceded all tournament.

Over the weekend, they trounced the Zambia women’s team 5-0, a surprise result considering it was expected to be a tight affair. Instead, Nigeria impressively shut off Zambia’s usually prolific forward pair of Barbra Banda and Racheal Kundananji, on their way to a victory that symbolizes their dominance throughout the tournament.

Through the group stage and the knockout phase, Nigeria has demonstrated that they have the firepower and grit to win, either by overwhelming opponents or grinding out difficult wins, which are strong signs that they’ll be prepared to win it all on Sunday.

The winners of WAFCON 2024 will go home with an all-new trophy and a prize of $1 million. Second- and third-place teams will receive $500,000 and $300,000, respectively.
