FIFA 2026 World Cup: Kylian Mbappe leaves France Camp

Kylian Mbappé’s early departure from the France national team camp following the friendly against Northern Ireland has sparked criticism back home in France.

Despite the fact that the exit was officially approved due to personal reasons, the Real Madrid star was later spotted in Madrid with his partner. This has led some supporters to question his priorities, with critics arguing that he is placing his personal life ahead of his responsibilities to the national team.

Why did Kylian Mbappe leave the France camp?

The development has raised concerns for both France and Real Madrid, given Mbappé's importance to Didier Deschamps' side heading into the tournament. France are expected to provide further updates after additional medical evaluations, while fans await confirmation on whether the striker will be available for Les Bleus' World Cup opening game.

The news initially sparked fears because Mbappé had left a training session early a few days earlier, leading to speculation about a possible injury. However, France have not announced any serious fitness issue, and the striker remains expected to lead Les Bleus at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

France will head into the tournament as one of the favourites, with Mbappé captaining a star-studded squad that includes Ousmane Dembélé, Michael Olise, and Rayan Cherki. Their World Cup campaign begins against Senegal on June 16.

Do you remember that song from the late 90s that had absolutely everyone on their feet — children, adults, grandparents — dancing like their lives depended on it? Nobody fully understood the lyrics, but that melody did not care. “Premier Gaou” by Magic System was that song, and it has just gone Platinum in France.

And not just the original. The 2023 Afro-house remix by Haitian DJ and producer Francis Mercier and Nitefreak is the version that earned the plaque, and the celebration that followed is the kind of video you watch twice just to feel something good.

Francis Mercier shared the moment on social media — him and the members of Magic System, standing in the streets of Paris, holding the commemorative platinum plaque and singing “Premier Gaou” at full volume with zero apologies. They are laughing, swaying, pointing at the plaque mid-lyric, and the call-and-response between Mercier and the Magic System members is pure Zouglou spirit from start to finish, punctuated with shouts of “Affaire à suivre!” — to be continued.

The lyrics they are belting out are as iconic as ever. “C’est dans ma galère que la go Antou m’a quitté, oh ah” — it was during my struggles that my girl Antou left me. And then the one line that has lived in the hearts of an entire generation: “Premier gaou n’est pas gaou oh, c’est deuxième gaou qui est gnata oh” — the first fool is not really a fool; it is the one who gets fooled a second time who is a real idiot.

Magic System first released “Premier Gaou” in 1999, and twenty-six years later the song is still finding new audiences, new charts and new milestones. Francis Mercier and Nitefreak gave it a new life in 2023, and that life has now gone Platinum in France.

Over the weekend, Burna Boy did what no African artist has done before, he sold out the legendary Stade de France, and gave a show that Paris won’t forget any time soon.

“Remember what I said about empty chairs?” he wrote on Instagram after the show. “Thank you France for consistently making my dreams come true.”

And what a dream it was. The Afrofusion superstar lit up one of Europe’s biggest stadiums with an explosive performance packed with music and movement. With his band, The Outsiders, and a full squad of dancers holding it down behind him, Burna moved through fan favourites like ‘City Boys,’ ‘Last Last,’ and ‘Sittin’ on Top of the World.’ Each track louder than the last thanks to a crowd that came ready to sing.

The night was more than a solo spotlight. The stage lit up with a parade of talent from across continents—Senegalese legend Youssou Ndour, British rapper Santan Dave, French-Congolese singer Dadju, and French-Haitian artist Joé Dwèt Filé, who joined Burna for a performance of their ‘4 Kampé‘ remix. French-Cameroonian rapper Werenoi also brought his fire to the stage, along with Fireboy DML, Shallipopi, DJ Lambo, and Burna’s sister Nissi, turning the concert into a global celebration of sound.

And there were fireworks too!

“Sold this stadium in a couple of months, off cycle! I’m so thankful for you all!!” Burna shared. “Big love to all my people that graced the stage with me! I appreciate every last one of you.”
