Spotify has turned five in Nigeria and to mark the milestone, the streaming giant just dropped some numbers that are going to make every Nigerian music lover very proud.

The platform launched in Nigeria in February 2021, and the very first song a Nigerian user streamed was, interestingly, not an Afrobeats track. It was Shiga Lin‘s Cantopop ballad from Hong Kong, which Spotify described as “a fitting start for what the next five years would look like: borderless, discovery-driven listening.” Five years later, the data tells a story that is hard to argue with.

Nigerian users have created more than 25 million playlists since launch, and in 2025 alone they clocked more than 1.4 billion hours of listening time. The average Nigerian listener on the platform is just 26 years old, and listening has grown by over 163 percent year on year since 2021. The number of Nigerian artists on Spotify is also up 158 percent since launch, meaning more creators are reaching audiences at home and around the world than ever before.

Now to the part everyone wants to know. The five most streamed artists in Nigeria over the past five years are Asake, Wizkid, Seyi Vibez, Burna Boy, and Davido. Asake’s position at the top is backed by serious numbers. Spotify notes that he has four of the top ten most streamed songs in Nigeria over the five year period, with his track “Remember” sitting at number one.

Afrobeats is the genre driving most of this growth, scaling by a staggering 5,022 percent since 2021. But Nigerian listeners are not stopping there. Amapiano has grown by 10,330 percent, gospel and praise music by 5,499 percent, hip-hop and rap by 3,020 percent, and R&B by 2,602 percent. Perhaps the most telling figure of all is that streams of music in Nigerian indigenous languages grew by 554 percent in 2024 alone, which Spotify says shows “a deep connection to local-language storytelling.”

Podcasts are also finding a serious audience. Nigerians have streamed almost 60 million hours of podcast content since Spotify launched, confirming that the appetite for audio in Nigeria goes well beyond music.

Five years in, and Nigeria is one of the most passionate listening audiences on the platform.

While alté, amapiano, fuji, highlife, and other genres are still striving for their moment at the top—and artists continue to resist being categorised under Afrobeats—the genre keeps expanding its wings.

In 2025, African artists have achieved major streaming milestones, released outstanding singles and albums, toured the world, and delivered energetic performances at exciting venues like Coachella and beyond. Although it has become more difficult for new artists to break through, acts like Kunmie, Kojo Blak, and Jux have significantly grown their audiences this year.

In this piece, we spotlight ten of the most outstanding Afrobeats albums released so far in 2025. These selections are proof that Africa’s music scene is vast and immensely talented, even in a year when some of the biggest stars have released fewer songs than usual. Released on March 27, 2025, Joeboy’s Viva Lavida is a 13-track album featuring collaborations with Tempoe, Elana Dara, Qing Madi, Olamide, and Wizard Chan. While the project is solid, it may not be Joeboy’s strongest body of work, yet this only highlights the depth of his talent rather than diminishing the album’s value.

Viva Lavida is a beautiful collection, with standout tracks like Taxi Driver, Adenuga featuring Qing Madi, and Osadebe. As expected, the melodies are top-tier, and the sound is both African and sensual. Without a doubt, it ranks among the best Afrobeats projects released in 2025.

8. Jux – A Day to Remember EP

Following his luxurious multi-day wedding with Nigerian actress Priscilla Ojo, Tanzanian singer Jux—also known as Juma Jux—released an extended play to immortalise the experience. The only thing questionable about the project might be the title. While the A Day to Remember EP was inspired by an event that lasted several days, one can’t help but wonder about the name choice.

The 7-track project, released on March 23, 2025, features appearances from D Voice and Phyno, blending amapiano, Afrobeats, Bongo Flava, and more. Songs like My Shayla, God Design, and Si Mimi resonated with listeners across the continent and beyond. A Day to Remember is, without a doubt, one of the standout albums of 2025.

7. Zinoleesky – Gen Z!

Zinoleesky, the Nigerian street-pop sensation, dropped his sophomore album Gen Z! on April 25, 2025, cementing his status as a voice for the youth. The 16-track project, released under Marlian Music, features collaborations with Ms Banks and Toosii, showcasing his versatility. Three months after the release of his EP “Children of Africa,” his first offering for 2025, Seyi Vibez returns with a fresh sound that dives straight into matters of the heart. Titled “Pressure,” his latest single finds him in a reflective mood, exploring themes of love, longing and emotional vulnerability.

In “Pressure,” Seyi steps into the role of the devoted lover, openly expressing how deeply he misses his partner and how much he yearns to be close to her again. Lines like “Got nothing on but my t-shirt / She loves it how I took all of my time in to get to know her” speak to a sense of intimacy and emotional depth, as he takes his time to build real connection.

The track uses “pressure” as a metaphor for the emotional force that shapes and strengthens their relationship.
