Tems & Bukayo Saka Had a Studio Session at Abbey Road and Arsenal Says It Is “Landing Soon”

3 mars 2026 à 14:28

A collage of Tems in a white corset dress and Bukayo Saka in a black leather varsity jacket.

What do Tems and Bukayo Saka have in common? Apparently, a studio session at Abbey Road and something that is landing very soon.

Arsenal shared a video of the two at the legendary Abbey Road Studios in London with just two words as a caption — “Landing soon” — and that was all it took for the internet to completely unravel. A footballer and one of Nigeria’s biggest music exports, together in the same room where The Beatles once recorded, working on something nobody saw coming. We have questions, and we suspect the answers are going to be very good.

The video opens with Tems in the recording booth, hair in long voluminous curls, dressed in a dark oversized zip-up fleece jacket with a yellow graphic pattern over a lime-green top. She moves through the studio with the ease of someone who has spent a lot of time in rooms like this, warmly greeting her collaborators and welcoming them into the space. Saka showed up in the Arsenal Terrace Icons Track Top in deep burgundy with white Adidas three-stripes running down the sleeves and the Arsenal crest sitting on the chest.

The clip captures the early moments of what looks like a proper creative session — a musician’s hands moving across an M-Audio keyboard, audio cables spread across a red patterned rug. Tems sets the tone from the start, asking Bukayo, “I’m pressing record now. Are you ready?” before turning to the room and delivering: “Welcome to Abbey Road. Where the magic really happens. Let’s try something out.”

The comments came in fast and they came in loud. “The Trophy song is getting ready.” “We are so here for this!!” “Tems and Arsenal. Oh God.” Nobody is pretending to be patient about this, and we do not blame them one bit.

Whatever is coming, it is coming soon. And we will be right here waiting.

We bet you’ve already listened to Tems’ “What You Need” from her latest project, “Love Is A Kingdom,” but have you watched her perform it live?

The Nigerian singer recently returned to the COLORSxSTUDIOS stage with a stripped-back performance of the fan-favourite track, keeping things simple and letting the song take centre stage. With minimal production, the focus stays on her vocals and the lyrics, giving the performance a more intimate feel.

“What You Need” has been one of the standout tracks from Love Is A Kingdom, and this live rendition highlights why. Lines like “I’m not what you need” come through clearly, adding weight to the song without overdoing it.

If you thought the track “Raindance,” the fifth song on Dave’s latest album “The Boy Who Played the Harp,” already had you in a chokehold, wait till you watch the video.

The visuals drift between open water and quiet moments by the shore, with Dave and Tems moving through the scenes like two people circling something unspoken. One minute they’re at sea, the next they’re sharing dinner by the water, exchanging looks that feel familiar, careful, and loaded. It’s calm without being distant, romantic without spelling anything out — the kind of setting where feelings sit heavy in the air, even when no one says them out loud.

That’s exactly what “Raindance” is about. The song lives in that space where attraction has outgrown friendship, where love feels possible but complicated by past experiences and quiet doubt. Tems brings a steady, grounding presence, while Dave sounds thoughtful and exposed, reflecting on connection, commitment and wanting something better than what he grew up seeing.

If “Raindance” the track had you replaying it, the video gives you new reasons to press play again — not just for the way it looks, but for what it reveals about the story happening inside it.

Surprise Performances by Tems and Odumodu Blvck Light Up Palmwine Music Festival Lagos

Legend Extra Stout partnered with Palmwine Music Festival this December to deliver two nights of carefully curated live music across Abuja and Lagos. Both cities delivered memorable performances, but the Lagos edition added a layer of unpredictability when Tems and Odumodu Blvck made unannounced appearances.

The festival moved through two cities, starting in Abuja on December 12 at Jabi Boat Club before heading to Lagos on December 21 at The Fidelity Ground in Oniru. Across both nights, Legend Extra Stout’s signature was evident – bold, unapologetic and rooted in the culture it celebrates.

Abuja set the tone with performances from Ladipoe, BOJ, Ajebutter and Moelogo, among others. The night leaned into intimacy, with relaxed, assured sets that allowed the music to breathe. Legend Extra Stout flowed naturally through the evening, from backstage moments to shared conversations in the crowd, reinforcing the festival’s unhurried, communal atmosphere.

By the time the festival reached Lagos a week later, anticipation had built. The Fidelity Ground became a hub for Nigeria’s alternative music community, powered by Legend Extra Stout, hosting performances from Show Dem Camp, BOJ, Ladipoe, Tay Iwar, Lady Donli, Prettyboy D-O, Moonchild Sanelly and others. Each act brought a distinct energy, with performances unfolding seamlessly and the crowd responding in kind.

Midway through the night, the momentum shifted. As Show Dem Camp settled into their set, Tems stepped onto the stage without introduction. The response was instant – a surge of excitement that marked one of the festival’s defining moments. The night pushed further as Odumodu Blvck followed, another surprise that sent energy through the crowd and kept the atmosphere escalating.

Palmwine Music Festival occupies a distinct space within Nigeria’s live music circuit, spotlighting artists and sounds just outside the mainstream while shaping contemporary culture. The Abuja and Lagos editions proved the strength of that approach through strong line-ups, intimate environments and well-timed spontaneity. The takeaway was clear: Palmwine Fest is less about spectacle and more about experience. Legend Extra Stout’s partnership across both cities reflected a natural alignment with a festival built on authenticity, creative expression and cultural connection.

Tems is giving us another reason to fall in love with her style. The singer shared a few photos from her recent performances on Instagram with the caption “No ordinary girl,” and this look proves exactly that.

She kept things simple but striking in a black halter top with a plunging V-neckline – the kind of piece that relies on clean lines and great styling to make its statement. It’s bold without trying too hard, and it frames her shoulders beautifully, giving that confident, laid-back cool Tems is known for.

Her hair was the real talking point. A curly bob with soft, defined coils that framed her face perfectly. If you look closely, you’ll notice neat cornrow details along the sides, adding a subtle but clever twist to the style.

Makeup stayed true to her understated vibe: warm bronzed skin, lashes that make her eyes pop, and a soft nude-pink lip that tied everything together. She rounded it off with small hoop earrings.

It’s the kind of outfit you can imagine wearing to dinner, a gig, or a late-night rooftop party. Tems has a way of making something as simple as a black top feel fresh and memorable, and this is one of those moments.

Yellow does something special on dark skin — it glows, it lifts, it speaks. So when Tems stepped out at 7Fest in that canary-hued top, we knew we were about to be seated.

The halter-style top, slashed down the middle and laced in gold chains, didn’t play it safe. It draped and dipped in all the right places, sitting just above low-slung denim that nodded to a different kind of cool. Her body was adorned in gold, from a chain belt to layers of statement necklaces, giving this look the feel of both a goddess and a girl who knows exactly what she’s doing.

And she does. Tems has had a full-circle kind of summer, headlining Down The Rabbit Hole in Amsterdam, gracing stages across continents, and still finding time to serve looks that stay with you.

Her hair, styled into soft curls with cornrows that framed her face like a crown, completed the look. Her lips, deep brown-red, were rich enough to anchor the whole moment.

So yes, we’re still thinking about it. And saving it. And sending it to the group chat with that emoji.

See the look below.

Tems Announces Groundbreaking Mentorship Program for Women in Music: The Leading Vibe

2 juillet 2025 à 14:42

Tems is no stranger to big moves. Going from alt-leaning darling to multiple Grammy winner, the artist has been delving deeper into the rich crater of business choices that will undoubtedly solidify her as one of the most forward-thinking minds of her generation. But even by Tems' high standards as a musician and celebrity, her latest investment has the potential to become an industry gamechanger, spawning an impact that will surely outlive the 30-year-old artist.

As part of her efforts to democratize the music industry, Tems will launch the Leading Vibe Initiative, a platform dedicated to championing women within the scene. According to reports, women are significantly underrepresented in the music industry, with only 22 percent of musicians worldwide being women. Tems, who's one of the most successful artists of the new generation, definitely has a lot of tips and tools that will prove crucial to any emerging woman artist.

"Across Africa, I've seen firsthand how much talent exists, and how many female musical talents still face barriers at every stage. The Leading Vibe Initiative is my commitment to changing that reality," she tells OkayAfrica.

Debuting this August, Leading Vibe will be a purposeful initiative that showcases the intricacies of the music industry to rising artists, producers, and songwriters, drawing on the rich experience base of Tems and her managers, Muyiwa Awoniyi and Wale Davies. It will start from Tems' hometown of Lagos and expand to other African cities throughout the year, and eventually to other major cities across the globe.

Tems wearing a hooded leather jacket with a hand tucked in her chest

"My goal with the Leading Vibe Initiative is to help discover and support talented young women who have the potential to redefine the industry," she says. "By opening doors and building a real community, we can equip more women with the tools, resources, and networks they need to break barriers, amplify their voice, and shape the future of the global music industry."

The inaugural program is scheduled to take place between August 8 and 9, with an intimate event followed by a comprehensive day-long event that will include workshops, masterclasses, and panel discussions, all designed to provide participants with a multidimensional perspective on the music industry. Afterwards, the Leading Vibe will continue to support and counsel on the creative and business aspects of music.

"It's a movement, it's a network. It's a wave built for women by women, from the continent to the world."

No doubt a groundbreaking initiative, this reveals an incredible practicality from Tems as she takes action towards leveling the entry base for women artists. As we've seen from her success and that of other women stars like Ayra Starr and Uncle Waffles, the sound and perspective of women artists have all it takes to propel Afrobeats into a greater future.

By taking on this exciting and no doubt challenging task, Tems has again taken the lead, proving that she'll always put her money and resources where her mouth is. Or in this case, where her heart is.

You love her voice, you’ve probably replayed “Love Me Jeje” a dozen times, and now Tems is doing something just as iconic. She’s launching a powerful new platform — The Leading Vibe Initiative — to help more women across Africa break into the music scene. And not just singers. We’re talking songwriters, producers, engineers. Basically, the whole squad.

The Grammy Award-winning singer took to social media to share the news, writing:

Today, I’m so proud to launch The Leading Vibe. From my self-taught journey with no roadmap, I created this initiative to support African women in music, those breaking barriers, building boldly, and leading the next wave.

Rooted in her own story of navigating the industry without formal training or connections, Tems has built this initiative to support, connect, and amplify young women in music across Africa.

And she’s starting where it all began: Lagos.

Kicking off August 8–9 in her hometown, The Leading Vibe Initiative will host its first immersive programme. Designed for Nigerian women aged 18 to 35, the two-day experience will include workshops, masterclasses, and panel discussions led by seasoned industry professionals. Participants will gain hands-on training, access to professional tools, and valuable connections,  all in a space designed to empower the next generation of women in music.

For Tems, this mission is deeply personal. She spoke about how, despite the rapid growth of Nigeria’s music industry, space for women as writers, engineers, producers, and creators has been limited.

That’s why she created Leading Vibe: for the ones who believe. The ones who dare to be different. The ones with a dream to be seen and a voice that deserves to be heard.

The initiative also plans to eventually expand across the continent, with additional rollouts slated in Africa.

If you’re ready to be part of it, applications are now open.

Watch her talk more about the initiative below.

Grammy-winning Nigerian singer and songwriter, Tems, has been announced as one of the headline performers for the first halftime show at the FIFA Club World Cup. The historic event will take place on July 19, 2025, at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey, during the tournament’s final match, marking FIFA’s bold attempt to mirror the high-energy spectacle of America’s Super Bowl halftime shows.

Tems will share the stage with Puerto Rican hitmaker, J Balvin, and American Pop star, Doja Cat, in a performance curated by Chris Martin of Coldplay. The announcement comes just days after Tems was honoured with the Diamond Award at Billboard’s inaugural Global Power Players event in London, a recognition that further cements her international acclaim.

Her growing influence is also extending into sports. Earlier this year, Tems made headlines as the first African woman and artiste to acquire ownership in a Major League Soccer team, joining the investor group behind San Diego FC.

As Afrobeats continues to surge globally, its fusion with mainstream culture — from fashion to film to sports — reflects the genre’s growing resonance beyond the continent. Tems’ forthcoming performance at the Club World Cup final adds to this momentum and signals FIFA’s recognition of Africa’s cultural currency on the world stage.

Tems has been announced as a headliner for the first halftime show at the FIFA Club World Cup. Scheduled to be held in the US between June and July this year, it has been a hot topic as to how the footballing event could borrow a leaf from America’s Super Bowl halftime tradition, and now it’s finally happening.

The Nigerian superstar and her team are not new to the world of sports. Tems recently became a part-owner of San Diego FC, making history as the first African woman to hold ownership stakes in a Major League Soccer (MLS) club. She will headline the FIFA Club World Cup final at MetLife Stadium on July 19, performing alongside Puerto Rican star J Balvin and American act Doja Cat. The trio was selected for this highly anticipated event by Chris Martin of Coldplay.

As Afrobeats continues to scale internationally, collaboration between the music and sports industries is inevitable. As entertainment is a shared interest, artists like Tems have been intentional in positioning their brands to attract a wide range of partners. The Club World Cup has a peculiar appeal, being hosted in the United States, a country that, despite its recent political upheavals, has typically enjoyed a large demographic of Africans in the diaspora.

Tems’ inclusion on the Club World Cup stage not only represents Africa’s contributions to the beautiful game; it nods to the rich history of African American music, from Soul to R&B and hip-hop, that has been a notable influence behind her unique sound.

Further entrenching the halftime show in more noble ambitions, FIFA is partnering with Global Citizen, an organization dedicated to ending extreme poverty and providing children with access to education and football infrastructure. Consequently, the FIFA Global Citizen Fund aims to raise $100 million towards the achievement of these goals.

Through this potentially world-changing connection between football and music, not only are those goals possible, but both of these scenes are going to open up more favorably for their practitioners. Already, we’ve seen Afrobeats acts like Ayra Starr and Rema perform at a New Balance launch and the Ballon D’Or ceremony, proving that African stars, with all their swag and sonic brilliance, are going to be instrumental as the world consistently evolves into one big field of collaboration.

Given Tems’ expertise with live performances, the world will surely be in for a show on that MetLife stage.

Tems is headed to the pitch, this July and she’s not coming alone. The Afrobeats artist will join Doja Cat and J Balvin to perform at the first-ever halftime show at a FIFA Club World Cup Final. For the first time, the FIFA Club World Cup final will include a halftime show and the debut lineup is as strategic as it is star-studded.

This performance isn’t merely entertainment. Curated by Chris Martin of Coldplay, the show supports the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund, an initiative aimed at raising $100 million to improve educational access and youth football programmes around the world. The show, which will be streamed for free on DAZN.com, marks an intersection of sport, music, and global development efforts.

Tems, speaking about the upcoming performance, noted that it’s a chance to bring people together in a moment of unity through music and football.  “We’re going to bring the world together for a beautiful moment – to celebrate football, feel the unity that music brings, and improve the lives of millions of children through the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund. I can’t wait – see you at the FIFA Club World Cup final!” Tems said.

The synergy of these two global languages is at the heart of the initiative’s ambition.

FIFA President Gianni Infantino echoed the sentiment, calling the collaboration with Global Citizen a history-making moment. “Together, we’re going to make history on a special occasion where football and music unite the world,” he said.

He continued, “FIFA and Global Citizen are partnering to support a powerful cause: giving every child the chance to learn, play, and dream. This show will be unforgettable—not just for its spectacle, but for the lasting impact it will make.”

He added, “FIFA and Global Citizen are partnering to support a powerful cause: giving every child the chance to learn, play and dream. This show will be unforgettable – not just for its spectacle, but for the lasting impact it will make.”

The FIFA Club World Cup kicks off on June 13 and will feature 32 teams from around the world, including Manchester City, Chelsea, Real Madrid, Bayern Munich, and Inter Miami CF.

The nominees for the 25th annual BET Awards have officially landed, and African artists are making their presence felt. From Lagos to Johannesburg, Dar es Salaam to Accra, a diverse slate of continental talent has secured nominations across major categories, underlining the global rise and influence of African music.

This year, Nigerian pop powerhouse Ayra Starr leads the African contingent with three nods – Best Female R&B/Pop Artist, Best New Artist, and Best International Act. It's a significant moment for the 21-year-old, whose debut album, The Year I Turned 21, has positioned her as a standout voice in the Afro-pop landscape. Ayra's nomination haul cements her arrival as a local chart-topper and a fully-fledged global star.

Another Nigerian trailblazer, Tems, earned double nominations in the BET Her category for “Burning” and “Hold On,” both from her critically acclaimed debut Born In The Wild. Known for her introspective writing and haunting vocals, Tems continues to expand the boundaries of soul and R&B, infusing them with the spirit of Lagos while resonating with audiences worldwide.

Across the Best New International Act category, the spotlight turns to a new class of African talent defining the moment: Nigeria’s Shallipopi, UK-based Nigerian artist Odeal, South Africa’s Maglera Doe Boy, Tanzania’s Abigail Chams, and Durban’s genre-bending producer Dlala Thukzin all made the cut. It’s a testament to the explosive creativity bubbling from African scenes that increasingly set the pace for pop music at large.

Speaking on this year’s nominations, Senior Vice President & Co-General Manager at Paramount Africa and Lead at BET International, Monde Twala, reflected on the significance of this moment: “The 2025 nominations reflect the incredible creativity, influence, and impact of African artists who are shaping culture and pushing boundaries. These talents represent the diversity and heartbeat of a new generation, and the global resonance of our sounds.”

The awards continue to spotlight excellence across Black entertainment. US rapper Kendrick Lamar leads all nominees with ten nods, including Album of the Year for GNX and Video of the Year for “Not Like Us.” Rising star Doechii, with her genre-bending debut Alligator Bites Never Heal, earned six nominations, tying with Drake, Future, and GloRilla. Meanwhile, SZA and The Weeknd both earned four nominations each.

Celebrating its 25th anniversary this year, the BET Awards, dubbed “Culture’s Biggest Night”, returns to the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles on Tuesday, 10 June, broadcasting live on BET (DStv Channel 129 and GOtv Channel 21) at 01:00 WAT. The milestone event will also include the free 2-day BETX Fan Fest, co-produced by Live Nation Urban, with concerts, panel discussions, and community activations.

As African artists continue to break borders and redefine genre, their growing visibility at institutions like the BET Awards marks more than just individual wins; it’s a reflection of how the global cultural map is being redrawn.

This year’s Met Gala was always going to be a one for the books. The glitzy annual event, designed to raise funds for the museum’s Costume Institute, finally – in its 77-year history – paid tribute to the indisputable influence of Black style. Through the Costume Institute’s much anticipated exhibition, Superfine: Tailoring Black Style, and through the fundraiser itself, Black style took center stage. The exhibition specifically explores the ways in which Black men have used fashion as a tool for resistance and reinvention.

This was also the first time an African sponsor, African Fashion International (AFI), alongside the likes of Instagram and the Tyler Perry Foundation, helped support the event financially and had top billing as such. AFI founder Dr. Precious Moloi-Motsepe tells OkayAfrica that “Black dandyism is a cultural phenomenon that is alive on the African continent – in Congo, on the streets of Nairobi, in Lagos, in Johannesburg, in Cape Town. It’s a moment of reckoning and acknowledging the creative genius that comes from Africa as well as the African Americans in the diaspora.”

Moloi-Motsepe continues: “The Met Gala is more than an event - it is a cultural institution that influences how we view fashion. For AFI, it is an opportunity to highlight the depth, creativity, and global significance of African fashion and to challenge outdated perceptions of what African identity in fashion means. We are not just participants in this narrative - we are leaders in redefining it."

Moloi-Motsepe’s statement couldn’t be truer, as this year’s event features more than half a dozen African designers making outfits not just for African stars, but a diverse slate of celebrities. Designers of African descent often reference their diverse heritages and personal journeys in their work, frequently taking inspiration from and amplifying forgotten or overlooked histories of Black people in the process. African designers taking the spotlight on one of fashion’s biggest nights signals that the continent’s diverse stories and talents are no longer on the margins, but are contributing to the conversation.

Scroll through to see the looks, who wore them, and who made them:

Ozwald Boateng

The British Ghanaian designer’s 2025 Met Gala catalogue features Tems in a blue Ankara suit dress with a puff skirt accented with a green cravat and a matching umbrella; Burna Boy in a red wool tuxedo on a yellow shirt and red tie, all paired with an oxblood cape; Ayra Starr in a black high slit gown with a lapel collar, and Issa Rae in an all black three piece ensemble which she calls “dandy West African style.”

Ozwald Boateng was also worn by Jaden Smith, who walked the carpet in an all-black look with a cape in black and white stripe and checkered pattern; Colin Kaepernick, who wore a three piece burgundy suit made with Kente prints, and Henry Golding, who wore a gold-patterned three piece suit.

Ugo Mozie

Ugo Mozie made an unforgettable mark at this year’s Met Gala designing for and styling several guests, the most commanding being Diana Ross. After a two-decade break, Ross returned to the Met Gala Monday night wearing custom Eleven Sixteen by Ugo Mozie. The look is a crystal embellished white gown and a feathered cape that covers the entire breadth of the stairs and features the names of Ross’ children and grandchildren.

Mozie’s Eleven Sixteen also made the look won by Nigerian chef Kwame Onwuachi who stars in Netflix’s Chefs Table. The look is an all-black ensemble made with a striped pattern, and features a crown adorned by Nigeria-sourced gemstones, as well as custom carved bronzes from Benin, Nigeria.

Mozie also collaborated with BOSS, styling the looks of Senegalese Italian social media star Khaby Lame and American model and actor Alton Mason. Lame wore a grey striped three-piece suit with a waist coat adorned with about two dozen pocket watches. Mason arrived in a black floor-length cape over a sparkling two-piece crystal-embellished ensemble.

Thebe Magugu

For his Met Gala carpet debut, South African designer Thebe Magugu made his eponymous brand's first ever couture look worn by Aurora James, drawing inspiration from the female muses of Central and West African sartorial photographers of the '50s and '60s, the brand says on Instagram. The look features a flowing brown grown made from Chiffon, paired with a dramatic headpiece inspired by the geles worn by Yoruba women in Nigeria and West Africa.

Ivy Getty's look is a layered cream ensemble with metallic detailing, paired with a brown fur-accented clutch.

David Tlale

South African designer David Tlale dressed his longtime friend Moloi-Motsepe in a cream and gold patterned suit with bell-bottom pants, an off-shoulder neckline, and a dramatic cape.

Orange Culture

Nigerian designer Adebayo Oke-Lawal’s brand Orange Culture made an appearance at this year’s event making a custom piece worn by American actor Brian Tyree Henry. The look features a red two-piece suit, a white shirt and long black tie, with black knee-length boots, all covered by a red and gold texture coat that can be said to be a tribute to the late American fashion powerhouse André Leon Talley.

Chuks Collins

Nigerian designer Chuks Collins made the gown worn by American radio and TV personality Nessa Niab. The gown, named “An ode to Mama,” is from Collins’ upcoming Nné Collection, which he says is “a celebration of maternal legacy, identity, and ancestral elegance.” It is made in black silk with corset detailing, and the complete look features a puffer jacket-like cropped cape from Moncler x EE72 by Edward Enninful.

Hanifa

Hanifa, the brand founded by Congolese American designer Anifa Mvuemba, made the outfit worn by Savannah James, the entrepreneur and wife of this year’s Met Gala honorary co-chair Lebron James, who couldn’t attend due to an injury. The look features a striped burgundy pattern throughout and is made up of a jacket with corset detailing in the midriff area and a mermaid style skirt with a wide train.

Deji and Kola

Deji and Kola, the brand founded by Nigerian designers Ayodeji Adebayo and Kolapo Olabintan appeared on the stairs of the Met Museum this year by way of NFL player Jonathan Owens and media entrepreneur Claire Sulmers. Owens wore an all-white ensemble made up of a knitted handwoven Aso Oke tuxedo jacket and flared pants with a fur shawl on his shoulder. Sulmers’ red monochrome ensemble made up of a three piece suit and large cape. The look was styled by Nigerian stylist Swanky Jerry who also stars in Netflix's Young, Famous and African.

Ayra Starr leads the African contingent with three nominations: ‘Best Female R&B/Pop Artist’, ‘Best New Artist’, and ‘Best International Act’. These nominations reflect her expanding presence in both African and international music circles.

Tems earns two nominations in the ‘BET Her’ category for “Burning” and “Hold On,” both from her debut album “Born In The Wild.”

Tems, already a global sensation, continues to break barriers, earning two nominations in the ‘BET Her’ category for her moving tracks, Burning and Hold On. The ‘Best New International Act’ category also sees strong African representation, with Shallipopi, Odeal, Maglera Doe Boy, Abigail Chams, and Dlala Thukzin recognised for their work over the past year.
