Spotify has turned five in Nigeria and to mark the milestone, the streaming giant just dropped some numbers that are going to make every Nigerian music lover very proud.

The platform launched in Nigeria in February 2021, and the very first song a Nigerian user streamed was, interestingly, not an Afrobeats track. It was Shiga Lin‘s Cantopop ballad from Hong Kong, which Spotify described as “a fitting start for what the next five years would look like: borderless, discovery-driven listening.” Five years later, the data tells a story that is hard to argue with.

Nigerian users have created more than 25 million playlists since launch, and in 2025 alone they clocked more than 1.4 billion hours of listening time. The average Nigerian listener on the platform is just 26 years old, and listening has grown by over 163 percent year on year since 2021. The number of Nigerian artists on Spotify is also up 158 percent since launch, meaning more creators are reaching audiences at home and around the world than ever before.

Now to the part everyone wants to know. The five most streamed artists in Nigeria over the past five years are Asake, Wizkid, Seyi Vibez, Burna Boy, and Davido. Asake’s position at the top is backed by serious numbers. Spotify notes that he has four of the top ten most streamed songs in Nigeria over the five year period, with his track “Remember” sitting at number one.

Afrobeats is the genre driving most of this growth, scaling by a staggering 5,022 percent since 2021. But Nigerian listeners are not stopping there. Amapiano has grown by 10,330 percent, gospel and praise music by 5,499 percent, hip-hop and rap by 3,020 percent, and R&B by 2,602 percent. Perhaps the most telling figure of all is that streams of music in Nigerian indigenous languages grew by 554 percent in 2024 alone, which Spotify says shows “a deep connection to local-language storytelling.”

Podcasts are also finding a serious audience. Nigerians have streamed almost 60 million hours of podcast content since Spotify launched, confirming that the appetite for audio in Nigeria goes well beyond music.

Five years in, and Nigeria is one of the most passionate listening audiences on the platform.

One of the many things to love about Asake is that his sense of style is just as intentional as his music. Paris Fashion Week continued last week with the Men's Spring/Summer collections taking center stage. Both designers drew inspiration from their African heritage. Tchatchoua's 3.Paradis collection, titled "Steps to Nowhere," featured earth tones like beige and dark brown as a tribute to the Sahara desert. Meanwhile, Gomis' "A Silent March" collection celebrated his Caribbean and African roots through West African tailored suits and Jamaican crochet patterns. Other notable guest appearances include British rapper Darkoo, reggae-dancehall star Popcaan on Rain, BOJ on Stronger, and rising star Fadi on Paris.

Young Jonn has been one of the most penetrating voices in Afrobeats these past few years. With several hits under his belt and the commercially successful Jiggy Forever album, the Chocolate City man has earned the right to flex his laurels and talk about how great he is, which is the main theme behind “Che Che,” his new record.

On “Che Che,” he’s joined by Asake, another artist who constructed his acclaim upon such rocky ground. Both artists are in scintillating form as they reflect their distinct styles; the sweet-tongued bounce of Young Jonn floats in cheerful cadences, complemented by the swagger-driven rhythms of Asake, whose recent music has reflected his hip-hop influences even more vividly. All these nuances of delivery take on a searing form in this new single.

The song is co-produced by Jaytunes and Young Jonn himself, recalling the 2000s when, as a YBNL-affiliated producer, he soundtracked the uptempo direction of the era’s street pop. Perhaps that’s where his distinct interpretation of amapiano comes from, blending its hypnotic percussion with a flair that echoes the nightlife of Lagos.

“Che Che” would resonate with those who hit the road often and stake it all on the promise of a good time. Its anchor on divine help will do its bit among Nigerians, who are famously prayerful, except here it’s delivered with fiery pomp rather than solemn admonition. Following the upbeat direction of Young Jonn’s music, “Che Che” proves the natural follow-up to records like “Wetego,” on which he contributed a verse for his label mate Blaqbonez, and “Only Fans,” which had been Young Jonn’s first release of the year.

His sophomore effort, Work of Art, recently joined the exclusive club, hitting 100 weeks in the Top 10, a rare feat that further cements Asake’s dominance in the Nigerian music scene.

In a testament to his consistency and popularity, all three of the albums of Asake remain in the Spotify Nigeria Top 10, showcasing his sustained commercial appeal and the growing global recognition of Afrobeats.
